The University of Oslo Library (UBO) was founded in 1811 together with Norway's first university. In 1815 the library was given the responsibility of retaining and preserving one copy of all documents printed in Norway. Since 1883 the library has also been responsible for preparing the Norwegian National Bibliography. The main objectives of the National Library functions of UBO are to preserve and provide access to the national printed and written heritage and to be a scholarly library for the study of Norwegian culture in the widest sense of the word. At present UBO consists of the Main Library, housing the central management and administration, three national departments – the Public Services Department, the National and Special Collections Department and the Bibliographic Services Department – and seven faculty libraries which serve the University community. For information on specific departments please see University of Oslo.
