University of Oslo (3)The Centre for Ibsen Studies Library houses the Ibsen collection, the most comprehensive collection of its kind in the world. Scholars come from many countries to consult it and to be part of the scholarly community at the Ibsen Centre
The collection contains: (i) Henrik Ibsen's plays and poems in Norwegian and in translations into more than 60 languages; (ii) literature in many languages on Ibsen's life and oeuvre, including books, dissertations, pamphlets, articles, poems, and some parodies and 're-writings' of Ibsen's works; (iii) theatre programmes and reviews from Ibsen's day and up to the present; and (iv) some posters, sound recordings and videos..
The Reading Room has eight work places equipped with computer workstations for the use of scholars, students, and other visitors. Students and scholars with UiO passwords may use their own PC on a wireless connection . Scholars and advanced students who need to stay for an extended period may apply for a permanent seat.
Important editions of the plays and new and central literature about Ibsen and his oeuvre are shelved in the Reading Room. Books in the stack room are retrieved on demand. Articles have been organised in folders for easy access.
The reference collection contains dictionaries and encyclopaedias, and general cultural, theatre and literary history, dramatic theory, literary analysis, and a small collection of current periodicals.
The Librarian provides guidance in the use of the Ibsen Bibliography and other relevant databases by arrangement.
All of the material in the Ibsen Centre's collection may be consulted in the Reading Room, but it may not be borrowed for use at home.
Videos may be shown in the Observatory Villa. It is regretted that videos cannot be shown to groups.
