Sami National TheatreSámi Beaivváš teahter is a national company administered by the Municipality of Kautokeino with support from the Regional and National Sámi Associations and central government.
It began as an idealistic vision of self-representation through theatre after an international indigenous awakening in the 1970s and one of the most significant political battles in the modern Sámi history – the Alta hydro project. The first show was staged in June 1981 and from that emerged the theatre free group Beaivváš (meaning 'the little sun'). After the Sámi blockbuster surprise film Pathfinder, which was nominated for an academy award in 1987, Beaivváš got initiated a test period with regular funding until 1992, when Beaivváš turned into an institution with the name Beaivváš Sámi Teáhter. In 2000 Beaivváš was transferred to the Sámi parliament (founded in 1987). Today its budget is around 12 million NOK a year.
Sami National Theatre CompanyThe main aim of Beaivváš Sámi Teáhter A/S is to run and promote theatre activity in the Sámi language and to represent Sámi culture through theatre work and similar activities. The theatre is foremost working within the Sámi areas in Norway. To some extent the theatre shall also provide performances in other geographical areas in Norway as well as within the Nordic Sámi areas, and in addition abroad if there are economical allowances for such an activity.
The theatre is located at Kautokeino Arts Centre.
