The Norwegian Language Council is the national advisory body in matters pertaining to Norwegian language and language planning. The Council aims to protect the cultural heritage represented by the Norwegian written and spoken language and to promote initiatives to increase the knowledge of the Norwegian language. It is also responsible for following the development of written and spoken Norwegian and for giving advice to the authorities in matters pertaining to the Norwegian language, in particular the use of Norwegian in schools, in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) , in government bodies and amongst the public in general.
