Ground breaking Scottish theatre created by John McGrath (1935-2002), playwright and director, in 1973. Funded by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Arts Council. Its name derives from an article in The Economist in 1966 which stated that 7% of the population of Great Britain owned 84% of the capital wealth. Its work could be loosely described as 'political' although the main aim of McGrath was to prove that 'there [was] a working class audience for theatre in Britain which makes demands, and which has values, which are different from those enshrined in our idealised middle-class audience.' Its past productions have been wide ranging from the Greek Classics to Dario Fo and Frank McGuinness. It also undertakes outreach work such as Right Here Right Now!, a six-month project on the subject of youth offending.
