STV provides the ITV service to over 4.5 million viewers throughout Scotland. Since July 2006 it has comprised STV Central (formerly Scottish Television) based in Glasgow and STV North (formerly Grampian Television) based in Aberdeen. STV is owned by SMG plc.
STV's programmes are distinctively Scottish and reflect life in a country which sustains its own forms of law, education, religion and sport. The company's network production has a growing reputation as a provider of popular network drama. Its thriller series Taggart has a loyal 15 million following in Britain. In addition, Scottish Television Enterprises has also established a high reputation for its network children's programmes. Scottish TV has the largest and most varied regional output of any of the ITV companies - everything from drama and entertainment through to Gaelic and children's programmes.
Like Ulster Television in Northern Ireland, STV has resisted adopting the generic ITV1 branding that is now commonplace throughout the ITVplc regions in England and Wales.
In addition to its main studios in Glasgow and Aberdeen, STV has studios in Dundee, Edinburgh, Inverness and Stornoway:
