Located in Shambellie House at New Abbey, Dumfries and Galloway, the National Museum of Costume presents the story of fashion and social history from the 1850s through to the 1950s.Visitors can explore lifelike room settings from the Victorian and Edwardian periods, learning about the social functions of the clothes and following the story through each room of the house as it reflects a different period and event.
Many of the furnishings and paintings around the house are on loan from the Stewart family. The portrait paintings are of the Stewart family. Other items of glass, ceramics and furniture are from the National Museums of Scotland's other collections. The costumes on display are from the Charles Stewart gift and are complemented by costume from the museum's other collections.
