There are at least a dozen sites of interest around Calanais. The main stone complex contains around 50 stones in a cross-shaped setting and dates from around 3000 BCE. The impressive inner circle comprises 13 stones, the tallest of which is 4m high, and a small chambered cairn
The site itself is managed by Historic Scotland, while the small Visitors' Centre is managed by Urras nan Tursachan - Standing Stones Trust. The Centre features the 'Story of the Stones' exhibition, a fascinating walk-through display with graphic panels, models and an audio-visual display with a seating area which explores how the Standing Stones were built and used and what they have meant to people through the centuries.
