Falkirk Council 5Falkirk Museums and Archives Service is part of Cultural Services, which covers heritage, visual and performing arts. It has 60 staff and 11 properties covering Falkirk District, which is defined by the local authority area.
It provides a service to Falkirk and the surrounding area. Its primary aim is to collect, document, preserve, exhibit and interpret the culture and heritage of the area. To do this, the service operates, three Museums: Callendar House, in Falkirk, Kinneil Museum in Bo'ness and Grangemouth Museum. There is also a major Museum store and workshop in Grangemouth where the main object collections are held. Callendar House contains a History Research Centre which provides the Archives service for the local area and also an information and enquiries service. There is also a Teachers centre from which a service (including loans and resources) is provided to schools and colleges. The Service actively acquires and preserves objects, photographs and documents relating to the social and industrial heritage of the area and has been active in the collection of natural science data and voucher specimens from sites throughout Falkirk district. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are provided on topics of historical and environmental interest. All planning proposals in the district are monitored, particularly with regard to the implications of development in archaeological excavation and recording surveys.
