The Museums, Libraries and Cultural Property Division deals with the sponsorship of a range of mainly national museums and galleries in England, the British Library, Public Lending Right, and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). It develops policy on a range of issues affecting the sector, including free access, museums education, and moveable cultural goods.
Current projects include the following:
Museums Consultation Document and Policy Framework - a public consultation document entitled 'Understanding the Future: Museums in the 21st Century' was launched in 2005, opening up a debate within the sector on the long-term future of museums, their rationale, funding structures and role as learning providers and services to the public.
Renaissance in the Regions - overseen by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), the Renaissance programme is investing £117 mllion over five years to support improvements in a number of regional 'Hub' museums, broadening their appeal, attracting new audiences, conserving and re-interpreting their collections, and enhancing their role in learning provision, community development and economic regeneration.
Museums Education Programme - this programme, in partnership with the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), aims to improve the ability of museums to support learning, to strengthen the capacity of the museums sector to contribute to a universal cultural entitlement for school-aged children, to support continuing professional development among museum staff and teachers, and to encourage working in partnership between national and regional museums.
Reform of Museum Statutes to allow Restitution of Human Remains - the Human Tissue Act 2004 allows nine national museums to de-accession human remains in their collections, allowing their return to indigenous communities of origin.
