The Baird Institute History Centre and Museum lies in the centre of the town of Cumnock, and was opened in 1891.
The Museum holds a collection of Mauchline ware of world importance, complimented by many items of Cumnock pottery, mining equipment, and photographs and artefacts of local and social history. Works of traditional and contemporary art and crafts are also displayed here.
The History Centre holds written material and artefacts covering all aspects of Ayrshire’s past. Family history material held includes Census information 1841-1891, parish records, some births, marriages and deaths before 1855, gravestone inscriptions, local newspapers from 1834 to date (some indexed) and numerous family and local history books. The Baird Institute also holds maps and numerous photographs and postcards covering East Ayrshire towns and villages as well as local authority archives and some private archives. Microfiche/film readers are available.
East Ayrshire Library, Registration and Information Services works closely with the East Ayrshire Family History Society to stage monthly Family History Workshops here.
