Based at the South Lanarkshire Council Records Centre, South Lanarkshire Council Archives and Information Management Service is responsible for the selection and preservation of records and archives relating to the South Lanarkshire area. The service selects and preserves the records of South Lanarkshire Council and the local authorities that existed before South Lanarkshire came into being. It also preserves the records of local organisations, businesses and individuals.
Archives are the unique, irreplaceable records of government, business, organisations and people. You can use archives to research your family tree, the building of your house and the development of your local area and community, and to investigate the actions of local and central government.
The council's Archives and Information Management Service is based at the Records Centre and the Council's archives can be accessed there. These include the records of South Lanarkshsire Council, its predecessor local authorities and local businesses, organisations and individuals. Please contact the Records Centre in advance of visiting to arrange an appointment.
The service is happy to advise on the suitability of the collections held for research topics. For those who are unable to visit the Records Centre, the Service will undertake some research to answer specific enquiries. Any detailed research will be carried out through a charged research service. Contact the Records Centre for further details.
In addition to the County Archives, Family and Local History Libraries may be found at Hamilton Town House Library and Lanark Library. Small collections of local studies and heritage material are also held at Rutherglen Library, Blantyre Library (David Livingstone material), East Kilbride Central Library and Halfway Library. In addition, Stonehouse Local Heritage Group runs a small Local Heritage Centre above Stonehouse Library.
