Clackmannanshire Archives contains historical records relevant to the county, many of which were previously held in the Central Region Archives Department at Stirling. Although many of the categories of material relate to local government in the area, the repository also contains a number of private deposits. It is hoped that the material currently held will in due course be supplemented by other material such as Customs and Justice of the Peace records (these are currently held by Stirling Archives).
The Archive contains the records of the former Clackmannanshire, Clackmannan District, the old Alloa, Alva, Dollar and Tillicoultry burghs and the Alloa and Hillfoots district councils. Within these holdings there are major runs of material such as local authority minutes, letter books, school log books and Valuation and Assessment Rolls. Among the private deposits can be found material relating to various local businesses and voluntary organisations. There is a substantial body of material from the former Patons & Baldwins operation and the Johnstone of Alva estate papers is another major collection which is currently being catalogued.
Archive material can be produced for public use at Alloa Library during library opening hours. The holdings are stored in a separate building and two deliveries, one in the morning and one later in the afternoon, are guaranteed each weekday. Up to four items can be requested at a time and it is necessary for a form to be completed in each case. Material may be requested in advance by writing to the Archivist at the library or by phoning 44 (0) 1259 722262. Material will only be available in the evenings if a request has been submitted by 5pm and items will not normally be produced on Saturdays unless requested by the preceding Friday afternoon.
The Library's Walter Murray Collection of local studies material, which contains materials such as books, maps, pamphlets, photographs and slides, local newspapers, recent Valuation Rolls and the 1841 to 1901 Census enumerators' books on microfilm, is housed in Alloa Library and is readily available during opening hours.
