Glasgow Royal Concert Hall rose from the ashes of the St Andrew’s Halls in 1990, when Glasgow was awarded the title European City of Culture. Amongst the criteria for winning the coveted title was the construction of architectural works of great interest for the city, so that the new Concert Hall became the cultural flagship for the city.
The incredibly tight building schedule allowed only 15 months for design and 27 months for construction. In reality construction overran by eight weeks, but still met its target to be opened on 5 October 1990 by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, at a final cost of £29 million.
Designed by Sir Leslie Martin, the Hall began construction in 1988 under Edinburgh based company, RMJM and Partners. In April 1988 the first stone was laid and it was 30 months before the final opening in October 1990. In 1994 the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall produced and promoted the first Celtic Connections festival, which has since grown in both size and profile.
The venue receives approximately 240 concerts and events a year. In addition to presenting Celtic Connections every January, the programming schedule includes approximately six International Classical Concert series each year.
