University of Dundee Archive Services is the section of Archive, Records Management and Museum Services (ARMMS), which manages and maintains the University of Dundee's manuscripts and records collections. The main aims of the department are (i) to secure the long-term preservation of the University collections and selected institutional records; (ii) to promote the use of the collections to support the core institutional aims of research, teaching and learning; and (iii) to use the collections to support the promotion of the University.
The archives are open to members of the public as well as the University and hold extensive collections of interest to a wide range of researchers. Areas covered include education, religion, social and business history, medicine and health, and local and family history.
Major collections include the following:
Business, organisational, church, legal and private records - including substantial business collections relating to the jute industry in Dundee and India; the Bett Brothers (builders) collection; ecclesiastical collections include the Brechin Diocesan Library Manuscripts, the Glasite Church and the Arbroath Methodist Church;
The University Collections - comprising records of the University of Dundee and its predecessor institutions - University College, Dundee, and Queen's College, Dundee - dating from 1881 to the present and merged institutions including Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design;
The Brechin Diocesan Library Manuscripts - containing the records of the Brechin Diocese of the Scottish Episcopal Church including the correspondence of Alexander Penrose Forbes, Bishop of Brechin and the records of local churches.
Tayside Health Board Archive - containing the records of many hospitals and other medical institutions, including Dundee Royal Infirmary, Dundee Royal Lunatic Asylum and Sunnyside Royal Asylum, Montrose, as well as the Dundee General and Mental Hospitals Boards of Management.
The Michael Peto Photographic Collection - containing over 120,000, predominately black and white, images taken by the Hungarian photo-journalist Michael Peto (1908-1970), major themes include pre and post-war Britain; the arts, especially the London ballet scene; Cambridge Prospect Theatre Productions, Eastern Europe, Israel and India;
The Turner-McKinlay Photographic Collection - comprising over 15,000 photographs/images from the University collections.
The Map and Plan Collection - comprising over 10,000 plans from the manuscript and University collections.
The Kinnear Local Collection - containing a substantial number of local books and newspapers including many rare items.
The Joan Auld Memorial Collection - this relates to British labour, social and shipping history and was established in memory of the first university archivist; the books can be consulted on a reference-only basis in the Archives;
A CD Rom Library - a small collection of relevant sources on CD.
