City of Edinburgh 2The records held at the City of Edinburgh Archives are an invaluable resource for anyone interested in researching the history of Edinburgh. The archives form a unique memory of the city and can shed light on most aspects of Edinburgh’s past. They include political, administrative, judicial, personal, domestic, criminal, religious, social, legal and commercial records. Edinburgh City Archives is responsible for rescuing, preserving and improving access to these records.
For those interested in local history, Edinburgh’s buildings, people who have lived here, family history, a notable civic event or an educational project, the City Archives may well be the best or only source of information.
It is possible to make enquiries by letter or telephone. Several hundred letter and telephone enquiries are answered every year. Alternatively it is possible to visit the public search room in the City Chambers to consult the actual archives. However, as it can only accommodate 12 people, advance notice is required.
Some records are stored several miles away and can take three days to produce. For a variety of reasons, certain records that one might reasonably expect to find here have not survived and other series are held elsewhere in the city. It is best to discuss your enquiry with the Archives before a visit.
There are no formal restrictions on access to the search room. Once you are there, the archivist on duty is responsible for such matters as issuing documents to children and the use of laptops and mobile phones. All users must abide by the search room regulations which are on display and available on request. Please ask the archivist if you have any questions or need assistance with your enquiry.
All records are consulted under the archivist’s supervision.
There is a limited photocopying service and photography by arrangement.
