The Glasgow School of Art Archives were set up in 1994 to select, preserve and make available the School's historical records. The Archives are managed by the School's Archivist and are continually being expanded as non-current records are identified for preservation.
The School's Archives are an outstanding resource for the study of art, design and architecture and art education. Given the School's history and international reputation, the archives are of immense importance for researching the development of these disciplines and the many influential people who have taught and studied here. In recording the School's foundation and documenting its activities since it opened in January 1845, the Archives also serve as the School's 'memory'. They are unique and irreplaceable.
The Archives comprise the School's institutional records and a number of archive collections deposited by former staff, students and related organisations.
The Glasgow School of Art Archives welcomes all bona fide students and researchers. Most records that are over 30 years old are available for consultation. Records that are less than 30 years old may be accessed with the permission of the Head of the relevant department. Please bear in mind that cataloguing work is ongoing.
External researchers are requested to make an appointment in advance. Researchers visiting the archive for the first time are requested to complete a reader registration form and produce identification that includes proof of address and signature.
