The Clan MacMillan International Centre was created at Finlaystone, the Scottish home of Chief George MacMillan, to act as a focus for a kindred long scattered to the four corners of the earth.
It consists of two rooms at the far end of the Finlaystone Visitors' Centre, which is housed in the estate's old carriage house. The outer, or Public Room, contains a general display about Clan MacMillan past and present. It is divided into two sections. The first contains information about the origins and early history of the clan, and the homes of its main branches in Scotland; while the second has displays about the clan's genealogy, its septs, and its present worldwide organisation, and some of the more prominent MacMillan families around the world.
A notable feature is the full-size working replica of the 'McMillan Velocipede', the first bicycle, which was invented in the 1830s by Kirkpatrick McMillan from Dumfriesshire. The Clan MacMillan Public Room is normally kept locked, but will be opened for any visitors wishing to see it.
The inner, or Archive Room is only open to clan members by appointment. It contains displays about the chief's family and the original Clan MacMillan Society (founded 1892), along with correspondence and newsletters from all the clan's branches around the world, a library of books by and about MacMillans (and sept members), and a great deal of family history material sent in by clan members around the world. This room also houses the computer used for the genealogical data being compiled as Project MAOL; all of which is currently available for the use of clan visitors, and some of which can be accessed elsewhere in the world via the search index in this website.
The Archive Room can be accessed by clan members accompanied by the Archivist/Genealogist, Assistant Curator, or a member of the chief's family. While one of these is on the estate most days visiting clanspeople must ring in advance to be sure of seeing the Archive Room, especially if a genealogical consultation is required (our archivist/genealogist Graeme Mackenzie no longer lives on the estate, but he is always happy to see visiting clanspeople there - or in Edinburgh - by prior appointment. For contact details see his Highland Roots for MacMillans page.
