Aberdeen was founded as a Royal Burgh in 1179 at the mouths of two Scottish rivers, the Dee and the Don. It is Scotland's third largest city with a population of 212,125 (2001).
Awarded Royal Burgh status in 1319 by Robert Bruce, Aberdeen became the educational centre of north east Scotland following the establishment of King's College in 1495 by Bishop William Elphinstone.
In recent years Aberdeen's traditional industries of fishing, paper-making, ship-building and textiles have been overtaken by the oil and gas industries - it is often called the oil capital of Europe and unemployment is consistently low in the area. Aberdeen is an important centre for the sea cargo industry, with a modern harbour and ferry port.
Aberdeen is often described as the 'Granite City' as many of its buildings are constructed of local granite, which is also one of its chief exports.
Aberdeen City Council is one of 32 Local Authorities in Scotland.
