The Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus has built a reputation as one of Scotland’s finest and most versatile choirs. It is the SCO’s resident chorus, working regularly with conductors including Conductor Laureate Sir Charles Mackerras, Conductor Emeritus Joseph Swensen, Frans Brüggen, Nicholas McGegan, Emmanuelle Haim and Kenneth Montgomery.
Recent concerts have included repertoire as diverse as Purcell’s Birthday Ode for Queen Mary Come ye Sons of Art, Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day and the rarely-performed Athalia, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and works by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The Chorus appears in Scotland’s major cities and has toured to London (Beethoven's Fldelio) and Barcelona (Handel's Messiah); in 2004 it gave an acclaimed a capella concert of Scottish and American music at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Other recent projects include Mozart's Requiem (May 2006) and a new commission for the SCO and Chorus by Edward Harper (October 2006).
Recordings include Mozart's Requiem with Sir Charles Mackerras (on the SCO/Linn record label, Mozart's Il Seraglio with Mackerras (Telarc), Bellini's I Capuleti ed i Montecchi with Donald Runnicles (Teldec) and Rossini's Zelmira with Maurizio Benini (Opera Rara).
A regular visitor to the Edinburgh International Festival, the Chorus has performed in a wide variety of events including a ballet production of Mendelsson's A Midsummer Night’s Dream and concert performances of Mozart operas, winning one of coveted Herald Angel Awards in 2001 for Handel's Messiah with Sir Charles Mackerras. In 2005, the Chorus took part in two outstanding opera performances: Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito with Sir Charles Mackerras (recorded for Deutsche Grammophon) and Rossini's Adelaide de Bourgogne with Guiliano Carella, which was recorded live for Opera Rara.
In addition to its work with the Orchestra, the Chorus is in demand for outside engagements. These have included a concert of music by Britten and Purcell with the Dunedin Consort, BBC Songs of Praise and ballet productions of Carmina Burana (Birmingham Royal Ballet) and Mozart's Requiem (Northern Ballet Theatre) at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre.
