Talbot Rice Gallery 2A department of the University of Edinburgh, the Talbot Rice Gallery falls under the management of the Director of the Collections Division, which is part of the ISG planning unit based in the University's Library. The temporary exhibitions programme is monitored by the Scottish Arts Council.
Talbot Rice gallery staff are led by the Curator, supported by the Gallery Secretary and Clerical Assistant, and 2 installation/reception staff. The post of a part time Education Officer will be introduced in January 2005.
This is a public gallery with two exhibition spaces; showing temporary exhibitions in the White Gallery and Round ROom, and the University's permanent collection in the Georgian Gallery - open free to the pubic with a programme all year.
Talbot Rice Gallery was established in 1975 and is named after David Talbot Rice, Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art from 1934 to 1972.
The Gallery has received Scottish Arts Council funding for the temporary exhibition and education programme since 1977. All other overheads and salaries are met by the University of Edinburgh.
The Gallery's programme has grown considerably in scale and ambition along with an award winning education programme and additional programme of small experimental exhibitions in the round room.
The Talbot Rice shows 5 major exhibitions per year in the White Gallery with an accompanying programme of experimental shows in the round room:

A citywide project exploring the legacy of Blinky Palermo. Talbot Rice Gallery will exhibit the Palermo Archive from Bonn, October 2005.
The Gallery runs an active programme of free events developed in response to each exhibition and receives high attendance figures for these events.
The Gallery publishes exhibition catalogues on a regular basis, often working collaboratively with other organisations.
An artist residency scheme was run from 1985 to 1987 within the studios of Talbot Rice Gallery.
The Gallery is keen to strengthen links with International artists and organisations and establish relationships. The Gallery has a proven record of working with overseas artists and groups and welcomes this opportunity.
The Gallery has a friends organisation.

There is also the Georgian Gallery, where the University's permanent collection is shown.
Lighting: Halogen and fluorescent lighting. Lux adjustable.
Installation system: Nails into plaster walls, and pedestals/plinths of various sizes.
Climate control: The Gallery monitors relative humidity and temperature consistently.
The Gallery has full CCTV surveillance. It has access to a range of support through the University including audio-visual support. The Gallery also enlists the support of freelance technicians.
Sales Policy: sales permitted/not permitted, sales commission 40%
Availability: Talbot Rice Gallery programmed 2 years in advance but is subject to change.
Opening hours: 10am - 5pm Tues - Sat; Festival Hours: 10am - 5pm Mon - Sat, 2pm - 5pm Sun
Facilities: Shop, auditorium/conference facilities, studio/workshop under review.
Talbot Rice Gallery, as part of the University of Edinburgh, is committed to making changes to the Gallery in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act, addressing services for disabled visitors.
Accessibility: Wheelchair access to both floors of the White Gallery; disabled parking; assistance available; induction loops; audio guides; large print material; Braille signage; provision for Guide Dogs.
Accessibility: Staff Training is ongoing. Courses most recently attended have been Scottish Arts Council run "The Access Factor", focussing on access to the arts for disabled people.
