Ross SInclair, photo by Alan DimmickThe Travelling Gallery is a non-profit making, mobile gallery of contemporary visual art, curating challenging contemporary art in all media
The Travelling Gallery was first established in 1978 by the Scottish Arts Council to provide greater opportunity for communities throughout Scotland to experience the quality and diversity of contemporary art at first hand, and the current vehicle was custom built in 1983. In 1997 the SAC transferred ownership of the Gallery to the City of Edinburgh Council, who continue to provide a national service. Plans are currently in place to build a new vehicle to continue the service well into the future.
Inside the Travelling GalleryThe Travelling Gallery curates and tours two exhibitions each year, each touring Scotland for around four months. Exhibitions include a mixture of both established and up-and-coming innovative artists from both home and abroad. Curated with the Gallery’s diverse audience in mind, the exhibitions display high-quality work ranging from one-person video installations to craft exhibitions or large group shows including work in a variety of media.
The Travelling Gallery operates an award-winning education programme which includes talks in the gallery to groups and individuals, free full-colour interpretative publications for all visitors, a teachers/education pack including worksheets, research and reference materials, and a programme of artist-led workshops, talks and events.
