Highland Print StudioHighland Print Studio is a project of art.tm, an educational charity funded by Scottish Arts Council, Highland Council - Comhairle na Gaidhealtachd and HIE Inverness and East Highland. It is run by a voluntary Board of Management. It is a visual arts studio which houses a printmaking workshop and visual arts education space.
Highland Print Studio was founded as Inverness Printmakers Workshop and Gallery in 1985 and subsequently changed its name to Highland Printmakers Workshop and Gallery. In 1997 the opportunity to buy the Gallery and the successful Lottery application enabled the refurbishment of the gallery building and re naming of the organisation as art.tm. It is now known as Highland Print Studio.
Highland Print Studio recognises the importance of the visual arts in people’s lives. It provides open access to the printmaking workshop and education studio to individuals and groups. It seeks to make the visual arts accessible to all and encourages participation for all. It also seeks to achieve an enhanced level of artistic skill through its classes and workshops, it enables community and school groups to use the workshop to complete projects and supports community workers and school staff in printmaking and digital imaging. It is also a facility for the production of public art and is capable of creating opportunities for employment in the form of tutoring, production and artistic residencies.
The printmaking facilities are traditional hand presses for Intaglio, Relief & Screen Printing. Limited access is available for Digital imaging. Technicians are present at all open times. The programme of classes include Life Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Digital Imaging & Video Editing, & Applied Arts such as Papermaking and Textile Art. There are regular classes for children. Tutors occasionally take workshops to the community. In-service training is offered to art teachers and many teachers also attend classes as part of their continuing professional development. The studio is used regularly by groups of adults with special needs and mental health problems. Inverness College, UHI's HNC Fine Arts and Interior Design staff use the printmaking workshop to deliver part of their course. Projects which bring user groups together with organisations such as Project Ability and Art Trek are ongoing. Highland Print Studio also seeks to engage with other cultural organisations such as Highland Council - Comhairle na Gaidhealtachd, Highland 2007 and Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.
Highland Print Studio's three-year development plan includes plans to host at least two residencies each year. Provided suitable funding can be achieved some of these are likely to be international. It welcomes approaches from overseas artists and arts groups.
