University of Abertay (2)Opened in 2007 on the ground floor of the University's main building, White Space is a unique £2.5 million knowledge environment for students, staff and local businesses.
White Space is a thriving hub of activity, mixing the talents of Computer Arts students, PhD students and lecturers with those of business people, broadcasters and artists, plus its own in-house graphics and digital media teams. The White Space concept surrounds students with the buzz of a real working environment, allowing them to share real-world knowledge and experience.
White Space is about creating a set of essential, personalised assets and including their development in all of the University's programmes so that they build students' confidence and help them get a better job in the real world. These assets include creativity, the ability to work in teams, the ability to work within, across and between disciplines, an understanding of the limits of knowledge and the significance of research, enterprise and entrepreneurship, and an ability to make correct and ethical decisions in the absence of all relevant facts.
The University of Abertay has developed ways of teaching that focus on building general skills alongside the subject-specific knowledge to support career and life objectives. White Space thinking is also reflected in the way that it approaches its future estates development and its research and enterprise centres have led the way in creating open, flexible work areas with the minimum of rules for how they are used. Essentially White Space is a creative learning and working environement that will shape the way the University develops.
The Division of Computer Arts and Media, part of the School of Computing and Creative Technologies, has been in White Space since it opened. Undergraduate and postgraduate students share teaching and learning space with lecturers and local businesses. This unique learning environment ensures students gain confidence, critical thinking and problem solving techniques in real working environments. (http://computerarts.abertay.ac.uk/).
Other resident organisations and projects include Dare to be Digital (http://www.daretobedigital.com/), the UK’s premier computer games design competition for students; the Hannah Maclure Centre (https://portal.abertay.ac.uk/portal/page/portal/hannahmaclure); the innovative graduate enterprise training and support facility Embreonix (http://www.embreonix.com/); the White Space Solutions Team (http://www.whitespacesolutions.abertay.ac.uk/); and the Transition Project set up to oversee the amalgamation of the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen to form a single new body known as 'Creative Scotland' which will advise, support and invest in the arts and creative and screen industries across Scotland.
