Glasgow Independent Studio was established in 1995, by graduates from Glasgow School of Art, acquired first studio premises.
The complex is on the top floor of a tenement-style factory building, looking to the south and east side of Glasgow. Located in close proximity to contemporary visual art spaces such as Transmission Gallery, intermedia, Free, Street Level Photoworks, WASPS and Glasgow Print Studio, the Glasgow Independent Studio and Project Room is an established venue in the Glasgow's artscene.
In 1997 GIS acquired second studio premises and in part of this space created Glasgow Project Room, situated in close proximity to many other galleries, the 8.75m x 7.80m x 3.45m space is used by artists to make and show work outside the public funded, more established and larger venues of the city. Resulting in a challenging and diverse programme of experimental shows, organised by invited artists, curators and its own committee. With collaborations with other venues such as CCA, Tramway, Out of the Blue and many international connections. The Glasgow Project Room provides a central role and brings essential dialogue to the contemporary art scene of Scotland.
2001 acquired third studio space bringing total number of studios to 43.
