Promote YT is Scotland's national network membership organisation for youth theatres and other organisations engaged in the development of performing arts by young people, which aims to support the development of youth theatre by: (i) facilitating networking; (ii) providing skills development and training opportunities; (iii) providing a national platform for youth theatre; and (iv) acting as an advocate for youth theatre.
Originally established in 2003 as an informal network organisation by an informal network of youth performing arts practitioners in response to the Scottish Arts Council Review of Youth Theatre, it was incorporated on 29 June 2004. In January 2005 it hosted its first annual national networking and skills development event entitled ‘Exchange’, and in July 2005 it organised the first National Festival of Youth Theatre in partnership with Clackmannanshire Council - held at the MacRobert Arts Centre and other venues around Clackmannanshire, this event was attended by well over 100 young people and practitioners from all over Scotland and beyond.
A Director was appointed to lead the organisation in October 2005, closely followed by the appointment of a Development Officer in January 2006.
The Promote YT website went live on January 2006 and SKILL-UP 2006, the networking and training programme for drama and youth theatre practitioners, marked the beginning of a three year strategy to support and encourage the development of youth theatre in Scotland in line with the demands of the sector.
Promote YT will shortly be undertaking a full re-mapping of the youth theatre sector in Scotland.
Through PROmotion – the forum, e-bulletins, and e-zine, Promote YT seeks to support and expand the network currently working in Scotland.
Promote YT is proud to produce and host the annual National Festival of Youth Theatre:
