Based at Kew in London, the National Archives is a government department and an executive agency under the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs. It brings together the Public Record Office, the Historical Manuscripts Commission, the Office of Public Sector Information and Her Majesty's Stationery Office. The National Archives is at the heart of information policy, setting standards and supporting innovation in information and records management across the UK, providing advice on opening up and encouraging the re-use of public sector information. Through our efforts in promoting best practice in information management, we look to ensure the survival of today´s information for the future.
The National Archives gives detailed guidance to government departments and to the public sector on information management, in order to ensure the survival of records in whichever form they are created, be it paper or digital. It also advises custodians throughout the public and private sectors about the care of historical archives.
The National Archives is also the UK government's official archive, containing 900 years of history with records ranging from parchment and paper scrolls through to digital files and archived websites. The National Archives makes open records available to all, either onsite or online, continuously developing new tools to make history tangible for everyone.
In the National Archives, like most other government departments, records are kept on registered files. These files exist in both paper and electronic formats. The files are used to document the transactions of the National Archives' administrative activity or to group together records on a specific subject.
The Archon portal has been created to enable visitors to view the acquisitions (accessions) of UK archives repositories in the UK (archives, libraries, museums and universities). Visitors can search by repository name, town or county.
If unable to find a document online, researchers should visit the original collection at the National Archives in Kew, West London.
