Slovenj Gradec Urban Municipality covers a total area of 174 square kilometres and has a population of 16,689 people (2002) living in 22 settlements. Slovenj Gradec is the administrative and culture centre of the north-central part of the Koroška region.
Slovenj Gradec is the only Slovene city to bear the name UN Messenger of Peace. Every year it marks United Nations Day with a series of events that turn the entire city into a showcase of peace under the title 'Let's Preserve Our Peace'. This event usually features exhibitions of paintings, photographs and literary works by children revolving around the theme of peace.
