SKUC GalleryThe establishment of ŠKUC Gallery in 1978 as part of the alternative programmes of the ŠKUC Association offered an important foil to the dominant exhibition policy of the established national galleries and institutions in Slovenia.
The Gallery was launched with a retrospective presentation of work by the conceptual art group OHO. In the 1980s the Gallery became the centre of alternative (sub) culture in Ljubljana, presenting various multimedia projects. Its programme continued in the 1990s with solo exhibitions by young, hitherto unknown Slovene artists, solo exhibitions or public projects by established Slovene and international artists, thematic and group exhibitions organised by guest curators, and socio-cultural documentary exhibitions.
Over the years ŠKUC Gallery has become one of the most visited exhibition premises in Slovenia, with some 1,000 visitors on average per exhibition. Through close co-operation with institutions and individuals working in the region, including art centres in Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Italy, ŠKUC Gallery has developed into an important art production centre, and since 2000 it has also begun to represent its artists at international art fairs. During the last decade, the following internationally-working artists have been presented in the Gallery: Ingold Airlines, Rasheed Araeen, Jože Barši, Raimond Chaves, Attila Csörgő, Tacita Dean, Leif Elggren, Olafur Eliasson, Vadim Fishkin, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Irwin, Janez Janša (formerly known as Žiga Kariž), Antal Lakner, Juri Leiderman, Maja Licul, M+M, Olaf Nicolai, Cesare Pietroiusti, Tadej Pogačar, Marko Peljhan, Goran Petercol, Marjetica Potrč, Mladen Stilinović, Nebojša Šerić-Šoba, Nika Špan, Apolonija Šušteršič, Elulalia Valldosera, Sislej Xhafa.... and many more.
ŠKUC Gallery has become an important fine art, publishing and documentation centre. Please see the ŠKUC website for information about current exhibitions and other activities as well as an exact plan of the premises.
