Nangarhar Provincial Government
Street address: Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan
Contact: Haji Din Mohammad Governor
Nangarhar Province is located in eastern Afghanistan with a population of 1,488,140 and an area of 7,195 square miles. A flourishing centre of Buddhism until the 5th century, its recent history includes the Treaty of Gandamak, signed during the second Anglo-Afghan War. Well irrigated, it produces wheat, corn and rice, which it exported to the Soviet Union until 1989. Its forests have been heavily logged and the wood exported. Nangarhar had one of five regional museums prior to the conflicts. The uprising in the provinces forced the Soviet regime to transfer the objects to Kabul. Unfortunately during the civil war of the 1990s 80% of the artifacts were destroyed by rocket attacks. Hadda is one of the most important Buddhist sites which hosted pilgrims at its many temples. It was in Nangarhar that the Buddha is said to have received his religious call.
