Samangan Province is located in north central Afghanistan bordering Uzbekistan and Tajikistan with a population of 406,030 and an area of 6,425 square miles. Horse breeding for buzkashi is part of the economy. The capital is an important pre Islamic site with a stupa, Takht e Rustam. Nearby are a group of 10 Buddhist temples called Kie Tehe.
