Takhar Province is located in northeast Afghanistan bordering on Tajikistan with a population of 871,200 and an area of 6,770 square miles. It produces carpets, gold and silver and two thirds of the salt used in Afghanistan. Marco Polo remarked on the great corn market in Taloqan.
