The BBC World Service Trust is currently working to strengthen the media sector in Afghanistan. The UK Government’s Department for International Development gave a £1 million grant to support immediate actions focusing on five areas: (i) providing equipment to Radio and TV Afghanistan for two radio studios and stabilising radio production; (ii) training more than 150 journalists in Kabul and the regions; (iii) working in partnership with the Afghan Interim Authority (AIA) to assess future needs and the foundations for a regulatory framework for the media; (iv) production of radio programmes about the ‘Loya Jirgah’ (the traditional council which will define the future constitution of Afghanistan) on the BBC World Service in Pashtu and Persian; and (v) opening a Media Resource Centre for Afghan journalists. The Centre aims to provide a range of information, training and communications facilities and will also contribute towards co-ordination of international media efforts in Afghanistan. The BBC Media Resource Centre has a screening room with 23 seats and space for 45 chairs. The screen is 2m by 6m and the multi media projector has VHS and computer links.
