Roshan is the trading name for the Telecom Development Company Afghanistan Ltd, an international consortium with strong regional connections led by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) and comprising Monaco Telecom International (MTI), the US-based MCT Corporation and Alcatel. The word Roshan means 'light' in Dari and Pashtu and symbolises TDCA's commitment to bring a new era of high quality and reliable communications to Afghanistan through the extension of digital GSM wireless services throughout the country. Since its initial launch on 27 July 2003 in Kabul, Roshan has expanded its network to five other major cities - Herat, Kandahar, Mazar e Sharif, Jalalabad and Kunduz. To date Roshan has invested over $75 million in building the Roshan Network, and this investment is expected to grow substantially over the coming years.
