Sharh e Zohak
Located 17 kilometres from Bamyan town, this fort city protected the entrance to Bamyan during the reigns of the Shansabani kings in the 12th and 13th centuries. Archaeologists have found evidence of a structure dating from the first century CE. Elaborate towers guarded the stairway to the first and second level and the path led to rooms for the soldiers. It was at this fort, which guarded the entry to Bamyan Valley, that Genghis Khan’s son was killed, leading him to vow to destroy the people of the region.
