Babur's Garden 2 (Linda Mazur)
Babur’s Garden, the first Moghul ‘Paradise Garden’, is said to have been a model for many other gardens. Long a favourite spot for family picnics, it was heavily mined during the Soviet era to deter large gatherings. Before that it comprised the tomb of Babur, two swimming pools, a restaurant and spacious grounds with fruit trees and flowerbeds enclosed by brick and mud walls in the style of its time. The irrigation canals were badly damaged and years of neglect saw the death of most of the plants. Today Babur’s mausoleum is still bullet-scarred and covered with graffiti. However, the gardens have been de-mined and replanted, a greenhouse installed and the walls restored under the leadership of the Aga Khan Foundation.
