The site of the old city of Kandahar is located a few kilometres outside the modern city centre. Now deserted, it once comprised a fort and palace, with towers strategically built on cliffs. A Buddhist stupa and monastery date this city to the 3rd-5th century CE. In the ruins was found a huge bowl (now in the foyer of the Kabul Museum) with lotus leaves carved on it, a Buddhist symbol but bearing an inscription dating from the 16th century about an Islamic religious college. An inscription in Greek and another in Greek and Aramaic were also found here.
