The ancient town of Bagram was founded by Alexander the Great. It lay on two trading routes and the artifacts found here include carved ivories from India, lacquerware from China, Graeco-Roman bas reliefs, Graeco-Egyptian bronzes and glassware from Phoenicia, all dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries CE. The area was used as a military base by the Soviets and is currently a base for American forces.
