Ai Khanoum (Nancy Hatch Dupree)
Cradled in a valley between the Amu and Kokcha Rivers, Ai Khanoum is believed to be one of Alexander the Great’s towns, dating from about 300 BCE. Some 600 coins in mint condition were discovered accidentally in 1946, and later excavations from 1964 unearthed evidence of temples, baths, a palace and houses in a Greek style. Unfortunately the site has been looted.
