The Library of the former Délégation archéologique Française en Afghanistan (DAFA) is a private library for scholars containing a large collection relating to DAFA’s archeological findings dating back to 1922, plus material pertinent to Afghanistan for academics. By 1970 there were over 10,000 volumes and 3,000 periodicals in DAFA’s library. Because of the lack of security, DAFA stopped its work in 1982 and attempted to take the library abroad for safety. However, from 1982 to 1991 140 boxes of books sat in Kabul Airport without permission to leave. In 1992 they were moved to the cellar of the French Embassy, where they stayed until the fall of the Taliban in 2001.
