Since its foundation in 1993 the Media Centre for Afghanistan has been engaged in preserving the cultural and scientific heritage of Afghanistan and promoting education. In its work the MCA is guided by the principle that the right to education belongs to fundamental human rights. The priorities of MCA work are media collection, Afghanistan research projects, school projects, development of community centres and co-ordination of Afghan specialist’s community. Media Collection: The decade-long war led to the destruction of the country’s educational institutions and libraries. The MCA has been collecting the works of Afghan scientists, writers, artists and journalists that were scattered in the turmoil of the war and plans to transfer the media collection back to the country. Afghanistan Research Projects: For a long time the academic research had limited international academic interest. In order to revive this interest abroad, MCA initiated a series of scientific seminars and publications in Europe to offer a forum for intellectual exchange. School Projects: During the time of the Taliban MCA started to develop grassroots school projects, especially in the sphere of primary education. Now the interim government is co-operating in the schools in Nimruz, Mazar e Sharif, Jaji and Kabul. Community Centres: When a culture of peace is substituted for Kalishnikov culture there will be peace in Afghanistan. This project’s goals are conflict management and the building of strong civil society structures. To this end the centres are staffed with local specialists whose tasks are to supply the libraries with information, to develop and organise educational workshops and public discussions on socially relevant topics. Co-ordination of Afghan Specialists Community: The MCA hopes to contribute to the solution of the human resources co-ordination task.
