AINThe Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (NAC) is a non-governmental organisation which has been working with emergency and development aid to Afghanistan since 1986. The overriding goal is that ‘NAC will support the Afghan people’s right to independence and contribute to reconstruction and rehabilitation and development of the war-torn country. Its work will be based on developing knowledge and on mutual understanding and friendship between the Afghan and Norwegian people.’ The organisation in Norway is based on memberships and maintains an office in Oslo, with three employees. The Central Office is situated in Peshawar, Pakistan. The regional and sub-offices are located in central, northern and south eastern zones of Afghanistan. NAC is registered with the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The organisation has 131 employees and many partner- and community-based local organisations. Presently NAC is implementing, supporting and funding developmental project activities in the four core areas of education, health, environment and infrastructure (engineering and construction), through its programme offices and partner organisations. In addition, NAC is also extending emergency aid and relief. NAC currently receives funding through the Norwegian Government (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NORAD) and UN agencies, as well as private funding from Norway.
