Baghlan Province is located in the north east region of Afghanistan with a population of 1,029,710 and a land area of 6,626 square miles, It rests against the northern slopes of the Hindu Kush. In the north agricultural output includes sugar beet and cotton; coal is mined in the Karkar Valley. The famous Surkh Kotal and Robatak inscriptions were found here and numerous archeological sites from the Kushan period (c130 CE) have been discovered. A statue of King Kanishka excavated from the Surkh Kotal site once graced the foyer of the National Museum.
