Jowzjan Province is located in north central Afghanistan bordering Turkmenistan and has a population of 871,970 and an area of 10,126 square miles. Oil, natural gas and mineral resources have been found and a pipeline to the Soviet Union was completed in 1968. Turkoman carpets are another export. Afghan-Soviet archeological missions have unearthed Mesolithic and Neolithic sites.
