Kabul Province is located in eastern Afghanistan with a population of 2,916,110 and an area of 1,822 square miles. The southern Silk Route passed through Kabul. Istalif, located some 50 kilometres from the capital city Kabul, was a major tourist destination in the 1970s and home to a large pottery making community. It was destroyed by the fighting in the 1990s but is now slowly being rebuilt. Grapes are grown widely in the Province for raisin production.
