Ahmad Shah Durrani Mausoleum KandaharKandahar Province is located in south central Afghanistan bordering Pakistan, with a population of 1,212,030 and an area of 19,062 square miles. The capital, Kandahar was part of the Achaemenid empire (521-485 BCE) and the province is known for its fruit. Kandahar had one of five regional museums prior to the conflicts. The uprising in the provinces forced the Soviet regime to transfer artifacts to Kabul. Unfortunately during the civil war of the 1990s 75% of the artifacts were destroyed by rocket attacks. Plans to reopen the museum currently depend on finances. Kirqa Sharif Mosque contains the cloak of Mohammad. Mundigak (c 3000 BCE) was originally excavated by the Délégation archéologique Française en Afghanistan (DAFA) from 1951 to 1958. Shah Maqsud Shrine is a place of pilgrimage. Kandahar is the second largest city in the country and home to the Durrani family. It has been a business centre since its construction in 1761, especially for products in transit to and from Pakistan. The Mausoleum of Ahmad Shah Durrani (known as Baba Shah, Father of Afghanistan) and the Mosque of the Hair of the Prophet (Jame Mui Mobarak) may be found in the city.
