Tourism
Over the past two decades Việt Nam has emerged as a popular new destination for international tourists.
Despite being hit badly by the SARS and avian influenza outbreaks of 2003-4, the Vietnamese tourism sector recovered quickly, achieving its National Tourism Action Program (2002-2005) target of 3.5 million foreign visitors in 2005. International arrivals in 2007 reached 4,171,564, a figure 16.0 per cent higher than that of 2006.
While Việt Nam's tourism infrastructure is still nowhere near as developed as that of Thailand, over the next 10 years the country is predicted by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) to be among the top ten major tourist destinations in the world.
