Literature has always held an important place in the lives of the Vietnamese people. In contrast to some neighbouring countries, the literacy level of the population is high and there is a seemingly insatiable thirst for reading materials of all kinds. An avid readership supports the production of over 18,000 new book titles each year by the country’s 47 publishing houses and an output of some 700 newspapers and periodicals published by around 450 press organisations; bookstores are always busy; and great poets are remembered in numerous street names.
