Originally established in 1915-6 by academics of the École Française de l’extrème orient, this museum contains the world’s largest and most valuable collection of Chăm sculptures, taken by French archaeologists from various temple sites including Trà Kiệu (Singapura), Đông Dương (Indrapura) and Tháp Mâm (Vijaya) and dating from the fourth to the 15th centuries CE. The architecture of the museum uses popular motifs from the Chăm towers and was designed by French architects Pelaval and Auclair. In recent years the museum has benefited from the Programme on the Preservation of Chăm Civilisation and Heritage, set up with the support of the Musée Guimet in Paris, which has organised workshops on the preservation and restoration of relics and helped to restore several of the sculptural works held by the museum. At the time of writing the museum is being expanded, for further details contact the management.
