Opened in 1959, the Museum of the Cultures of Việt Nam's Ethnic Groups is without doubt one of the best museums in Việt Nam, though regrettably it still sees relatively few foreign visitors. It contains important collections relating to the history and ethnology of the wider Việt Bắc region, including costumes from all of the major ethnic groups, together with an extensive collection of agricultural, handicraft and hunting tools and more than 4,000 documents, exhibits and pictures relating to all aspects of Vietnamese civilisation. It is arranged in five rooms, each of which introduce Việt Nam’s different ethnic families – the Việt-Mường Room, the Tày-Thái Room, the H'mông-Dao Room, the Môn-Khmer Room and the combined Hán-Hoa/Malay-Polynesian Room. Funded by a grant from the Swedish agency SIDA, the state-of-the-art displays are captioned in Vietnamese, English and French.
